GOUDA

Hotel de Keizerskroon is located in the center of Gouda. Here you will find information about Gouda, and why you should visit this beautiful city!
Gouda is an ancient town in the heart of South Holland in the Netherlands. Count Floris V granted the city municipal rights in 1272.

Gouda is world famous for its Gouda cheese, which is traded on the Thursday Cheese Market. The city is also known for the making of candles, pipes, and syrup waffles. In earlier times, Gouda had a significant textile industry and a large number of breweries. Gouda cheese is not so much made in Gouda, but in the surrounding region. The full-fat cheese gets its name from the fact that it was traded in Gouda, where the city provided a strict quality control. The cheeses were weighed at 'The Waag', The Scale. Still during the summer on Thursday morning, a cheese market is held. Furthermore, Gouda is famous for the annual 'candle night' where traditionally the mayor reads from the Gospel of Luke.
